The Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Wind Energy invite applications for three postdoctoral fellows in the fields of solid and experimental mechanics in the context of fatigue of welds in offshore structures. The positions are to be appointed at the earliest possible date.

Fatigue remains a challenge for the design and maintenance of welded offshore structures. The three postdoctoral fellows will be part of a large project with the purpose to provide insight on the fatigue performance of welds in large structures with respect to the area of offshore application. Through model development and a general reduction of model uncertainties, the project will enable more reliable and cost efficient fatigue design, maintenance, and repair. To achieve this goal advanced concepts of fatigue testing, hybrid simulation, and fracture mechanics modelling will be enabled and combined.

The successful candidates will join an ambitious international research team with members from the Technical University of Denmark, Aalborg University, The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Center and Force Technology.

Candidates interested in (1) fatigue testing (to be employed by the Department of Civil Engineering) and in (2) structural hybrid simulation testing (to be employed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering) should preferably have a strong background in experimental mechanics and monitoring techniques, such as digital image correlation or acoustic emission. Prior experience within the field of experimental mechanics will be an advantage.

Candidates with a strong background in (3) solid mechanics and numerical fracture mechanics with a keen interest in discrete fatigue crack growth simulation in metals will be given priority, when applying for the position related to fracture mechanics modelling (to be employed at the Department of Wind Energy).

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in relevant fields of research, preferably within experimental and fracture mechanics and should have a strong interest in working in an inter-disciplinary environment and have excellent collaboration skills. Strong communication skills are an advantage and an outstanding academic record is a requirement. Applicants with a proven record of international collaborations will be favored. Applicants should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious, and hard working. Only applicants with great talent and a possibility to be among the brightest in their field will be considered. Positions are available immediately, and applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis until the positions are filled. The salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2½ years.

Your primary workplace will depend on the position applied for, i.e. Department of Civil Engineering, DTU Lyngby Campus, Department of Mechanical Engineering, DTU Lyngby Campus, or Department of Wind Energy, DTU Risø Campus.
