The Department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is looking to hire a postdoc within the section for Geotechnics and Geology. The chosen applicant will be working in the area of pavement mechanics. The lion’s share of the work requires close collaboration with Dynatest, a global company with headquarters in Søborg (Denmark), that provides pavement engineering consulting services and equipment. Specifically, the applicant will be heavily involved in the project ‘AWAPAVE’ (advanced and widely available pavement assessment tools for infrastructure evaluation). This project deals with building a new moving measurement platform for non-destructive pavement evaluation while traveling at highway speeds - provisionally called ‘Raptor.’ In this connection, the workload includes theoretical advances, numerical implementation, and execution of both forward and inverse analyses. These efforts are geared towards interpretation of Raptor collected data for supporting development decisions (e.g., sensitivity, calibration, sensing) and for generating knowledge of engineering worth.

Responsibilities and tasks
The applicant will be heavily involved in the project ‘AWAPAVE’ (advanced and widely available pavement assessment tools for infrastructure evaluation). This project deals with building a new moving measurement platform for non-destructive pavement evaluation while traveling at highway speeds - provisionally called ‘Raptor.’ In this connection, the workload includes theoretical advances, numerical implementation, and execution of both forward and inverse analyses. These efforts are geared towards interpretation of Raptor collected data for supporting development decisions (e.g., sensitivity, calibration, sensing) and for generating knowledge of engineering worth.

The candidate is expected to be self-motivated, curious, capable of independent thinking, and interested in sharing products with fellow researchers. Following is a specific list of tasks:

(i) Participate in developing computational tools for evaluating structural pavement responses under moving loads, considering both thermal and rate sensitivities in material properties.
(ii) Participate in full-scale experiments.
(iii) Carry out interpretation of both simulated and experimentally collected data.
(iv) Write project reports, journal articles, and conference papers.
(v) Present findings at various national and international forums.
(vi) Contribute to new applications for attracting research funding.
(vii) Help in teaching pavement-related courses at DTU and in guiding students.

Qualifications
The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent at the time of application.

To insure project success the applicant should possess the following technical proficiencies, ordered according to their relative importance: continuum mechanics, numerical analysis, coding Matlab/Maple/Python/C-related languages (one or more), pavement engineering, field experiments, laboratory investigation, digital image correlation, finite element method, data filtering, and sensor fusion. The main working language is English in which the candidate is expected to have excellent communication abilities; knowledge of a Nordic language is an advantage.

Assessment
Candidates will be evaluated according to the level of match they exhibit with the abovementioned list of proficiencies. At the same time, consideration will be given to proven scientific output.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is two years, with a preferred starting date of August 1, 2017. Basically, the position is ‘full-time’ but employment on a part-time basis may also be considered under special circumstances.
