DTU Civil Engineering, Section for Indoor Environment invites applications for a full-time position as Assistant Professor within the field of indoor environment and systems.

DTU Civil Engineering is composed of six sections. The research focus of the Section for Indoor Environment is on people and their health, comfort and performance when exposed to the indoor environment in a wide range of settings: at home, during transportation, at work, and in schools. We perform extensive studies, both under well-controlled conditions in the laboratory and in the field to discover which indoor environments are optimal for their occupants. Based on these insights, we develop energy-efficient solutions for buildings, and heating, ventilation and cooling systems that provide an optimal indoor environment in new ways. During the last decades, the group has held a strong international position as one of the leading research groups within the field of indoor environment.

The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

The research focus is on the effects of individual or combined indoor environmental factors on human comfort, health and productivity in spaces, together with advanced, occupant centered room conditioning systems that can actively control different indoor environmental parameters.

The focus will be on thermal comfort and air quality; however, influence of lighting and acoustics will also be a part of the research activities. With a thorough knowledge about the existing metrics, assessment methods, measurement methods and tools, the candidate should take on an innovative and novel research path to advance the state-of-the-art in the field of comfort and related room conditioning systems (e.g. advanced heating, cooling, and ventilation technologies).

Responsibilities and tasks
The Department is looking for a flexible and enthusiastic candidate, who be engaged in teaching and research on indoor environment and related room conditioning systems in buildings. Candidates are expected to develop strong collaborative, innovative and multi-disciplinary research activities, while they should contribute to strengthen and develop teaching in indoor environment and room conditioning systems. Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to engage in fundraising and active participation in externally funded projects.

Dissemination of research results is expected through scientific publications, interdisciplinary collaborative projects at national and international level, and services to public administrations and the industry.

Educational responsibilities include among other things classroom teaching/lecturing, supervision of individual or group projects, and supervision of M.Sc. students, Ph.D. students, and postdocs. The educational responsibilities will to the extent possible be related to the research focus area, however flexibility is required and it is expected that the candidate will be able to cover and contribute to a wide spectrum of topics on both bachelor and master level. Please note that the expected teaching on undergraduate level is primarily to be in Danish and on postgraduate level (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) it is required to be in English. International candidates are obliged to learn Danish. The position can include short teaching duties at Sisimiut Campus.

Administrative duties include academic assessment work on all levels.

The candidate is expected to operate within an interdisciplinary research team as well as actively collaborate with other research groups at DTU, e.g. DTU Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and DTU Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

  • Experience in the evaluation of indoor environments by means of climate chamber measurements, human subject experiments, and field measurements
  • Experience in research and teaching of sustainable heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in buildings and their effects on occupant wellbeing
  • Detailed knowledge on low temperature heating and high temperature cooling systems in buildings
  • Expertise in application of thermodynamic analysis methods  to room conditioning systems and indoor spaces
  • Experience in dynamic building simulation tools for indoor environment and energy performance assessment of buildings
  • An international network with universities, industry and consulting companies
  • Experience in development and management of scientific research projects
  • Teaching and supervision experience at MSc and PhD level
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated and challenging tasks
  • Good communication skills in Danish and English, both written and spoken

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
