The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the fields of materials science and climate research, starting from November 1, 2018.

The aim of this project is to develop a modelling framework that enables designers and decision-makers to establish design and maintenance strategies anticipating, mitigating, and adapting to the impacts of climate change on civil infrastructure. To realize the project goal, an interface to translate regional scale climate projection outputs to boundary conditions for material deterioration models will be developed, integrated with state of the art deterioration models, and subsequently used to identify key climate projection outputs driving deterioration of civil infrastructure. To account for uncertainty information in the variables involved, a probabilistic modelling framework will be developed, which will be subsequently tested and calibrated in a case study.

The successful candidate will join an ambitious international research team with members from the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen University, Danish Meteorological Institute, and Virginia Tech.

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in civil engineering, building physics or materials science.
Candidates with a strong background in material and deterioration modelling of cement-based materials along with a keen interest in climate research and numerical modelling in general will be given priority.

Candidates should be highly motivated, eager to seek and share knowledge, able to work independently in a dynamic group environment, and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
