DTU Civil Engineering’s section for Building Design invites applications for a 3-year PhD position starting September 2018 on ‘Concrete frost resistance – modelling frost attack’.
Project description
With regards to concrete frost deterioration, fundamental knowledge about the mechanisms leading to development of damage is still missing. This is a hindrance for the introduction of performance based specifications, which takes into account e.g. the local climate (temperature and moisture load). Therefore, it is the aim of the present PhD project:

  • to develop an experimental set-up, which makes it possible to control the temperature gradient of the concrete specimen as well as the moisture conditions at the specimen boundaries during freezing and thawing (contrary to standardised tests like e.g. CEN/TS 12390, where it is only possible to control the temperature at the concrete surface).
  • to carry out an experimental study that can elucidate the relation between temperature distribution and development of frost damage in concrete.
  • to establish a numerical model of heat and moisture transport in freezing concrete. The model is to be established based on chemical and physical concepts, such as concepts of phase change. The model is to be validated with measurements from own experiments.
Further tasks of the PhD student will be:
  • to disseminate results in scientific papers and at conferences
  • to attend PhD courses (30 ECTS)
  • to accomplish a mandatory external research stay
  • to co-supervise bachelor and master students
Candidates should have a master's degree in civil engineering, materials science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The preferred candidate is ambitious, has a high motivation for research excellence, and good communication skills (written and spoken English).
Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • experience with FE modelling, in particular modelling of transport processes
  • knowledge on concrete technology, including concrete durability
  • experience with experimental materials science
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
