Geotechnics deals with the foundation of structures. The foundation of a structure is determining for its load bearing capacity and hereby a central element in the loadbearing construction. Furthermore, the deformations of the foundation is a key element in the total performance of the structure. The area covers rock and soil properties as well as the shape and size of the foundation, its loadbearing capacity, and deformations during daily use. The area is primarily based on classical mechanics and physics, but also the properties of soil and rock are relevent in a geological perspective.
